Biography Back to Top
Jocelyn Butler is a multitalented musician who has won several solo awards in her many instruments throughout her studies. She began private piano studies at age five, private cello at age eight, and private French Horn at age ten, much to the amusement and bewilderment of all of her private lesson teachers! Ultimately, and despite having excelled in all three instruments, Jocelyn decided to concentrate professionally in Cello, receiving her Bachelor and Masters’ degree in Music Performance at Indiana University, where she studied with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, serving as his graduate teaching assistant for one year. She played in the IU Philharmonic Orchestra as an undergraduate and was their principal cellist in graduate school. Ms. Butler wrapped up her post-graduate studies at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where she completed a Professional Diploma in Orchestral Studies.
Ms. Butler received a three-year fellowship in 2004 to study at the Aspen Music Festival, where she performed in the top two orchestras under the baton of such prestigious conductors as David Zinman, Andreas Delfs, Sir Neville Mariner, Robert Spano, and James Conlon. During her most recent season, Jocelyn was asked to perform with Lawrence Dutton, violist of the Emerson String Quartet, in a faculty concert. Jocelyn served as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for the 2005-2007 seasons, serving as co-principal cellist during the second season. Ms. Butler has most recently studied with John Sharp, principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Other principal teachers include: Brant Taylor, Anthony Elliot, Eric Kim, Thomas Grossenbacher, Orlando Cole, and Metta Watts
In the summer of 2006, she was invited to study and perform in a string quartet coached by Richard Young of the Vermeer Quartet. Performances included a Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert broadcasted live on WFMT and several concerts in the Netherlands, following further training with the Vermeer and Jerusalem Quartets at the Daniel Festival in the Netherlands. Ms. Butler returns to WFMT in December 2007, this time as a solo performer.
Jocelyn was chosen to be the guest assistant principal cellist of the Miami Symphony for their 2008-2009 season, and she also won a position with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, beginning in 2008. Jocelyn also had the honor of performing a concert with the prestigious St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at the University of Chicago in March 2009.
An active soloist, chamber and orchestral musician in Chicagoland and the surrounding regions, she is also a member of the International Chamber Artists, becoming a regular performer on Chicago’s 98.7 WFMT.
